How to Compare Wireless Security Systems

There are several different types of security systems available for you to choose from. For your home, there are wired and wireless security systems available. Each one has its advantages and disadvantages, along with the differences in price as well.

The driving technology found with both wired and wireless security systems are quite different. Wireless security systems don't need to be wired through the house; they will instead send transfer messages to the control panel through radio signals. When they were first introduced, wireless security systems were proved to be unreliable when compared to the wired systems. As time went by and more and more people looked into them, wireless systems began to take form.

When compared to wired systems, wireless security systems are a lot easier and more convenient to install due to the fact of there being no wires. Wireless systems can save you a lot of money, time, and effort due to there being no ripping of the floors or walls in your home. Wireless systems on the other hand are more expensive than wired systems and you'll need to replace their batteries on a periodic basis. The primary advantage to wireless security systems is the fact that they are easy to relocate, meaning that you can easily shift them from one home to another.

Wireless security systems use the same components as other security systems such as the touchpad, control panel, cameras, detectors, and alarms. Wireless systems rely on radio frequencies that are transmitted by the door contacts, windows, and motion activated sensors. The touch pads that are located at the entrances to the home will provide activation and deactivation of the system. In the event of the power failing, a backup system will take over the wireless system and continue to provide security for your home.

To use a wireless system, all you need to do is input the code through the control panel. Normally, this is done prior to entering and leaving your home. Once the code is input into the control panel, the control panel will send remote signals to the rest of the system that will activate the alarms. Depending on the system you have, an alarm will go off either by motion detection or a window or door being opened.

If you look around you can find several different wireless security systems, many of which you can install yourself. Before you buy a system though, you should always consult a professional who can survey your home and suggest the equipment you need.

Modern security and surveillance systems for the home, office or commercial property

Security and surveillance systems have taken massive steps by enhancing the new computer based technologies. We now have powerful surveillance that is easy to manage at an affordable price. There are many aspects of home security systems and surveillance that are shared with business security or commercial property surveillance. A home security system is usually a deterrent to would be intruders and a means of assisting police should a burglary take place. In some areas an insurance company may insist on some form of electronic surveillance and electronic alarm system. In a business environment the electronic security system will go beyond the simple goals of a domestic security system. Casino security, is for example, very different from bank security or the security provided to users on the rail networks. Each industry has some unique requirements which must be met.

In its simplest form a security system relays the images caught on camera from one location and displays the image on a display device in a second location. This is where the original acronym CCTV (closed circuit television) originated. Many folk still refer to modern security systems as CCTV systems and who am I to argue. In truth however, the modern systems are computer driven with CCTV security camera surveillance equipment attached to a wired or wireless computer network. The computer technology could be packaged into a standalone DVR with 1 or more cameras attached. An entry level system would therefore comprise of a single channel DVR with a single security camera attached with a supplied cable. A simple variation of this system would be the DVR security recorder attached to a network camera using standard computer (Ethernet) category-5 cabling. Moving forward and you can select a multi-channel DVR which allow multiple cameras to be attached. An alternative at each stage is to utilise a PC or computer system with a single channel or multi-channel card installed. The range of Geovision data capture cards are each a multi-channel video surveillance card installed into a PC allowing different numbers of connected channels. The greater the number of channels then the greater the number of frames or images that need to be recorded and the processing power on board needs to be increased.

The open platform IP video surveillance management software from Milestone Systems can be used from the box or integrated into a unique solution. The open platform means this software can be used with almost any security or surveillance device. The Milestone XProtect software can be packaged with most hardware platforms and security cameras including megapixel cameras supporting full pan tilt and zoom management (PTZ).

The type of security camera used will depend very much on your own specific requirements. The bread and butter of the surveillance industry has for many years been the black and white or b/w surveillance camera but times are changing and colour (English spelling) is becoming a much more popular choice as the price differences converge. In addition to the colour and b/w models we also have available infrared day and night cameras capable of recording an image in almost total darkness. The infrared security camera is an ideal where lighting is poor. The area of vision seen by the camera is another choice to consider. There are cameras with wide angled lenses and then there is the dome security camera providing 360 degree all round vision which is ideal for a large reception area for example. The type of housing is yet another consideration - will the camera be required for internal or external use, should you need a vandal proof dome security camera or maybe a bullet camera for targeted surveillance. You may wish a camera to be a highly visible surveillance camera (sometime a dummy camera may suffice) or maybe you require a hidden surveillance camera. Other choices include the PTZ or pan, tilt and zoom enabled cameras or a sophisticated megapixel security camera.

Whatever your decision making process there are many CCTV camera systems and CCTV accessories for you to consider.

Advanced security systems to protect currency plants

The Korean national currency plant has implemented a comprehensive solution that includes a sophisticated access control system with fingerprint and iris biometric readers

Seoul, Korea, September 2, 2008 - DDS, a leading manufacturer of access control and alarm management solutions, announces that its solution has been selected to monitor access control and alarm monitoring of the Komsco national currency plant. Komsco, located in South Korea, mainly prints banknotes and coins for its own market and for other European countries as well.

The two main security concerns of currency plants have to do with storing huge amounts of money before their transfer to central banks, and keeping secret their manufacturing know-how. The risks of robbery, violence and extortion of key employees, and the evolving threat of counterfeiting have made physical security a primary issue for currency manufacturers. Komsco sought a solution to enhance the security and safety of its premises and employees as well as ensuring manufacturing confidentiality.

The access control requirements of such sites are considerable. There are many different types of control points, so that in addition to standard door controls, the system must also control access to more specialized areas, such as highly secured rooms containing currency moulds or trade secrets of banknotes. These requirements made it essential to have an advanced access control system, fingerprint and iris biometric readers, and integration with CCTV system part of the tender issued.

Several international security companies competed for this project, but after evaluating various enterprise solutions, Komsco decided to implement solutions from DDS. The combination of DDS’s TPL controllers with Keico biometric readers, which provide control over ‘who goes where’ and restrict access to non-authorized personnel, was selected by Komsco as the most suitable.

Biometric integration is a standard feature of DDS’s Amadeus 5 software. Template management (enrolment, download) and reader configuration are easily defined directly from Amadeus 5. For better security, an alarm will pop up if an authorized user put another finger (or from the other hand) than defined during the enrolment. DDS' software was also integrated with the Pelco CCTV system. Komsco now benefits from access control and CCTV " but with only one piece of software to monitor, thus eliminating the need for traditional hardware such as video matrix switches, multiplexers and quads. On the log screen, any event with supporting video footage is displayed with a camera icon. Clicking on the icon brings up automatically the footage in a separate window. Every recorded video is independently saved in Amadeus 5 and can be viewed even in case of DVR failure.

In addition to substantially increasing their level of security, employees appreciate the convenience of never having to worry about keeping a track of a card or key. DDS reports that Komsco is pleased with the results of the new access control system and is confident that the application is effectively controlling the premises.
